VEGETARIAN FOOD

From spiritual science we learn that the mind is formed by several strata, of
which the most external one, or shell, is called Annama-ya-kos'a or physical
body; this physical body is produced by what we eat. Therefore we can point out
that the saying "you ar what you eat is true".
If we externally harm
our body, our mind is affected too and at the same time if we don't eat the
right food (nutritious, easy to digest and suitable to both spiritual and mental
development ) we suffer the consequences . It is important to stress out the
fact that food is a biochemical substance just like our body.
Those biochemical
substances that we assimilate affect the biochemical equilibrium of the
glandular system in our body. Those are the glands which give rise to the
natural instincts of the mind (vitri) through a glandular stimulus of the
nervous system and of the brain. When those instincts are not controlled, the
mind suffers, and in order to maintain calm and mental control is advisable to
assimilate food whi ch does not stimulate those glands. According to the Yogi
Systems food should be divided in three main categories:
-
Sattivik (pure,
sentient): food which is suitable for both the mind and the body. In this
category are included all sorts of fruit, dried f ruit, seeds, light spices,
salt, sugar honey, herbal tea, most vegetables, pulses, vinegar, milk, cheese
products, homeopathic and neuropathic remedies. Sentient food is necessary for
those practising Asanas.
-
Rajasik(mutable,
active): food which benefit s either the body or the mind. It include all
those products which are not mentioned in Sattivik or Tamasik. For example
strong spices used in moderation, red chicory, black coffee and black tea (only
three cups a day are allowed) fizz drinks, soda chocolate and allopathic
medicines. Where the temperature is below water-freezing Rejasik food becomes
Sattivik and Tamasik food becomes Rajasik.
-
Tamasik (static, inert):
food harmful to the body or and the mind. It includes all meat products
(gelatine too) fis h, eggs, mushrooms, all kinds of onions, garlic, strong
spices, spicy cheese, tobacco, alcohol, food which is de-composing or not
fresh, tea or coffee (if than three cups a day), mustard seeds, yeast,
sea-food (seaweed are sattivik) allucinogic substances and other drugs which
affect the mind, all those medicines whicb are not prescribed by the doctor.
If you also consume too much food , either Sattivik or Rajasik, it can have a
tamasik effect.
