ASANAS

In the past "yogi" lived in contact with nature and therefore could observe the activities of those animals which were more developed. They discovered that certain animals have specifie glandular functions which can be beneficial to human beings.

For example the peacock is able to digest very heavy food; from that the yogi developed the Peacock Asana which derives from the peacock position and has a fantastic effect on the digestive system. Other Asanas such as the cobra, the hare, the tortoise, the fish etc., influence both mind and body. With regular Asanas practice you can improve the circulatory, digestive and nervous system, increase muscular tone and regulate hormonal secretion and therefore help mental and nervous equilibrium.

Furtherrnore asanas help to relax and unwind. There are several books that teach the asanas practice but you have to be careful. In the same way as a sick person goes to the doctor to ask for specifie medicines, a Acarya (spiritual guide), should be approached, in order to have the right series of Asanas prescribed.

Even though there are more than 50.000 Asanas which, when appropriately prescribed, can cure any physical weakness, only forty are taught. Asanas are very important to complement meditation. The vital process is based on the principle of physic-physical parallelism. This means that the physical and mental condition must be connected. Through meditation a mental trarisformation takes place, which refines the mind. However it needs to be balanced by a suitable diet, regular fasting and Asanas practice. Whenever the Asanas practice is not possible for some individual the meditation technique is appropriately modifled by the Acarya.
